Vascular Headache

A group of headaches felt to involve abnormal sensitivity of the blood vessels (arteries) in the brain to various triggers which results in rapid changes in the artery size due to spasm (constriction). There is a significant number of patients with headache, especially with vascular headache, (about 15%), and vascular headache associated with cerebrovascular ischaemic stroke. Other arteries in the brain and scalp then open (dilate), and throbbing pain is perceived in the head. Migraine headaches are the most common type of vascular headache. The result of the study (especially neuroradiological results) show that many patients, prevalently young women, had cerebral oedema during the attack of vascular headache. In this brief article, we will take a look at the three major types of headaches in hope of shedding a little light on those suffering with some of the most incredible head pain this side of a George Michael concert. Of course, the value of the headache significantly can change with the addition of other stimuli that will inevitably make it much worse.

Treatment of Vascular Headache

  • Regular exercise, such as swimming or vigorous walking.
  • Evaluation of certain foods in the diet.
  • Biofeedback training.
  • Drug therapy (medication).
  • Pressure applied to the bulging artery found in front of the ear on the painful side of the head.
