Headache Causes

Headache, like chest pain or dizziness , has many causes. Headache involves the network of nerve fibers in the tissues, muscles, and blood vessels located in the head and at the base of the skull.Cluster headache is one of the most painful types of headache. Fortunately, cluster headache is rare, affecting less than 1 percent of the U.S. population. A headache (medically known as cephalalgia , sometimes spelled as cephalgia ) is a condition of pain in the head; sometimes neck or upper back pain may also be interpreted as a headache. When the headache occurs in conjunction with a head injury the cause is usually quite evident; however, many causes are more unclear. The condition is more common in men. Cluster headache can affect people at any age but is most common between adolescence and middle age. (Migraine headaches are sometimes called vascular headaches. Vascular means having to do with the blood vessels.) These headaches can also suddenly arise in some people when they do not get enough sleep or food. People with an inherited tendency for headaches may respond more easily than others to these external stress factors. Some experts have therefore thought that headache is an adaptive and developed response. Although cluster headache attacks are extremely painful, they're not life-threatening. Several treatments are available to help make the attacks shorter and less severe. In addition, preventive medications can help reduce the number of headaches.
